Elevating FRC outcomes for banking operations requires careful matching of need to solution
By Jack Wagnon, Principal Consultant, SIM
The nation’s “Big Three” core banking providers—Jack Henry, Fiserv and FIS—are intensifying their efforts to strengthen fraud, risk and compliance (FRC) capabilities as banks face rising regulatory scrutiny and increasingly sophisticated financial crime threats.
Each vendor is taking a distinct path, offering IT leaders a range of tools to weigh against operational needs, regulatory expectations and board-level priorities.
Jack Henry: Real-Time, Cloud-Native Protection
Jack Henry has built its reputation on serving community and regional banks, and its latest offerings push hard into real-time, cloud-native FRC operations.
- Financial Crimes Defender unifies fraud and Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money laundering monitoring across checks, deposits, ACH and instant payments. Built on a public-cloud architecture, it integrates with Zelle, Banno and other payments networks. The platform uses behavioral analytics aligned with the Federal Reserve’s FraudClassifier taxonomy and recently won a 2024 industry award.
- Payrailz Fraud Monitor scores 100 percent of P2P, A2A and bill-pay transactions at scheduling, with banks able to set thresholds for interdiction. Early client feedback cites fewer manual reviews and more automated fraud stops.
- The company has partnered with AI risk-management firm Feedzai to bolster Defender’s analytics engine. Nasdaq Verafin, widely adopted by Jack Henry banks, remains a staple for AML and case management.
NOTE: At the time of this article’s publication, independent, audited outcome data for Defender is limited. Risk Officers leading procurement efforts will want to validate claims before betting big.
Fiserv: Integrated AML and Fraud Backbone
Fiserv has leaned on its maturity and integration across its Premier, Signature, DNA and Cleartouch cores, making its Financial Crime Risk Manager (FCRM/AML Risk Manager) a steady choice for banks seeking tested workflows over experimental technology.
- The suite includes AI-driven risk scoring, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring and e-filing, all built into case management.
- A Cadence Bank case study credits Fiserv with delivering more useful alerts, reduced false positives and automated suspicious activity report (SAR) filings.
- Payment Fraud Manager adds real-time flagging and suspension across channels, while the company highlights readiness for real-time payments and FedNow.
Fiserv’s deep sanctions and watchlist screening tools are widely recognized, giving compliance officers confidence in regulator-facing operations.
FIS: Auditor-Friendly Machine Learning at Scale
FIS pitches itself as the go-to provider for explainable AI in compliance, balancing innovation with audit readiness.
- Its AML Compliance Hub, powered by C3 AI, emphasizes machine-learning models with interpretable drivers. The company claims reductions of up to 85 percent in false positives, 200 percent increases in SAR identification and as much as 50 percent lower operating costs.
- Supporting products include AML Compliance Manager and the Prime Compliance Suite, which cover BSA/AML, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) screening and subpoena management.
- On the fraud side, SecurLOCK processes more than 75 billion annual card transactions with AI detection, and FIS has teamed with Stratyfy to bring explainable ML into card-alert reduction.
While bold, these numbers remain vendor-supplied. Banks are urged to test reduction claims in their own production environments.
Bottom Line for Banking IT Leaders
The choice isn’t about “new shiny” versus “tried and true”- it’s about aligning technology investments with your institution’s fraud-risk appetite, regulatory exposure and operational resilience.
For bank IT leaders weighing fraud-risk investments, the message is clear:
- Jack Henry is betting on real-time, partner-driven AI for regional institutions.
- Fiserv offers proven, integrated workflows for those prioritizing stability and compliance alignment.
- FIS emphasizes auditor-friendly, large-scale ML with aggressive claims of efficiency and cost savings
